Ok, for those who have forgotten, I picked up a bounty hunter outlaw 290 in a garage sale. I've learned its from the 70's and is one of the earliest models with any kind of a motion based detection system and discrimintation. I determined one slow, but accurate, method of using the machine to discriminate out iron without killing my arm:
step one: on all metal, mark all hits with a golf tee in a dull color (but still see able-I lost at least 15 already that I couldn't find-and they are wooden so no MDing!) Step two: switch to SPD and rehit every target. If I get a positive response, replace dull tee with bright tee ( I like white or red) Step three: return to all metal to pin point only on good targets. Dig target (yeah for bottle caps, beer cans, and aluminum foil) Step four: remove all tees, keep colors seperated, restart in new section. The only really good thing that happened today is a neighbor from up the street stopped to talk to me, turns out he owns a white's and garretts, and I have permission to dig in his yard (although he's pretty well cleaned it out) and I can borrow his Garret one day to see if I like it. I can come over any time he is home to talk MDing and look at his collection, apparently he's even found civil war bullets in this town!!! I sense a field trip on Sunday...(Saturday I'm busy) Unfortunately I'm busy all the rest of this week with school and SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) stuff. HH, Amberly P.S. I did find two coins today: deeply buried: 2000 quarter, gave it to the local paperboy, made his day, Very shallow: 1960 D penny (just a few years past wheat...darn) |

I spent some time in my back yard and then hit around the picnic table at the head start behind the house. Having no luck there I went down the hill to a tree next to a cement pad. No idea what this lot used to be, but as all I turned up were nails, a bottle cap and some other random trash, its not much now. Part of this area has a drain and a damp area that looks like an old driveway. I hunted it for a while, playing with the discriminator settings for the first time, and actually got hits that weren't cans, foil, trash, foil or foil (now that I figured out how to ignore nails, I had a new enemy). I found two pennies. They were clad, but hey they were COINS. I also found an old piece of iron that my boyfriend says would hold a piece of railroad track and have four spikes driven through it to attach it to the ground. Not what I expected to find in that area. Getting bored, I went to where the head start workers take their smoke breaks hoping to find some more clad. Nothing. As I was walking back to the house to give up for the afternoon I was waving the md along the edge of the parking lot, and it went off. I dug a penny. a few feet further I dug a dime. I went all around the parking lot and even braved working out in plain sight. I found a total of 9 coins worth $.27, my largest haul ever. And I have a good setting for clad coins. And I almost understand how to dig a good plug, although something other than my scaling knife from my tackle box might be a good investment.
Hopefully this week I can make it to the local summer swimming pool or playground, don't expect any old coins but should get plenty of practice digging clad and id'ing coins. For an older (1970s) machine, this BH Outlaw is really starting to work out. I'm glad I finally have a metal detector. And I'm 27 cents closer to a new machine. ![]() HH, Amberly oldest coin found today: 1969 Dime Dirtiest: 1997 Penny |
