Default New since Christmas

I received the Ace 250 for Christmas from my husband. I have piddled with it in the backyard and can't wait to find areas to search. I am totally new at this but I think I will love it. It is more than what I expected when I asked for a metal detector for Christmas. We live in the N. Tx. area, just north out of Denton. Any advice on areas to begin looking would be greatly appreciated. My son (16) went out in the yard the second day with me and he is now hooked as well. I search, he digs...works for me.
Thanks and I have enjoyed reading the discussions and learning a lot as well...
Casey

I agree, best place to start is your own backyard, learn what makes it go beep and why. Move on from there to some easy hunting like parks and schools. Research is fun, ya learn alot about the area you live in that you never knew. One valuable source I've found are the old guys who live in the area and grew up there. That's like tapping into a mine. Most are happy to tell their story to anyone who shows an interest and is willing to spend time with them. I ran into an older gentleman who's family first came into this valley in a covered wagon, we became good friends and have plans of hunting together next spring. Most of all, just enjoy the hobby, even a day diggin pull tabs and bottle caps is a day well spent. As a friend use to say, "any day above dirt is a good one." Bob

Thanks for all the replies. We went down to a neighbors house today, it was where the old homestead of our housing addition is located. The old barn is still there, but mainly old nails or rusted out pieces of metal was found. They are not sure where the house stood, so that would just be a guessing game. Our big find of the day was my son's time capsule he buried like 10 years ago. All that was left was a child's comb and his teeth he lost and put in an old baby food jar...He loved finding it though. There is still 1 more he buried like 5 yrs ago that we haven't located.
Thanks again all,
Casey

Casey glad to have you here! Sounds like you are off to a great start! Glad you have your son interested with you! Nice to have someone along on those outings! Schools are great to hunt, especially the high schools! I am having luck at swimming areas that have sandy Beach's! Lot's of jewelry and coin finds there! If you like old relics and coins, if you can find you an old home site that would be great! Or do research on where the oldest part of the town or city you live in try and get access to some areas you can dig for older coins and relics. Fields where they practice ball are great for coins and relics too!

Good luck and can't wait to see what you find!
