I was poking around the old homestead while my dad visited with my great uncle who then worked the farm. The home was nearly falling over at that time. I had my new detector and was finding all sorts of rusty nails and miscellaneous pieces of unknown rusty metal trash. So much I was getting tired of digging things up. I was around the side of the house. Just one more... I was surprised to find a coin -- unlike any I had ever seen. I ran over to dad and uncle. They new it. It was an early (I think about 1901) 1900's $5 Liberty Half-Eagle. It was pretty beat-up. As I recall, I sold it to the local coin dealer shortly after. Wish I had kept it!

Hi Doug and welcome, thanks for sharing that story with us. It's really cool to get posts like yours Doug. Well the Explorer is going to be quite a change from the kit detector you built way back when and be sure to show us some of your finds too. Chat with you later and God Bless ya.

welcome on the board doug. I llived in El Paso all my life then moved after retiring to central texas. Wiushed id stayed closer to New Mexico though.
A helpful book you can get at the local library is "New Mexico Place Names" which is a book of ALL the mail drops ever in NM it includes directions to each including range name to get you within 220 feet of the place. So if relic hunting or coing for them oldies go for the book and enjoy life. P.S. be sure and post them finds here for us to enjoy too. |
