Before I jump in with both feet I would like to know what would be the best metal detector for relics at about $200-250.

There is no true relic hunter in that price range but the Ace 250 will find them just the same. It's geared more for coins but has a relic mode which is merely an opening up of the discriminator. You'll be happy with one.
