After reading many post, I have bought the Ace 250- seems to be the "it" detector! I have been out in my yard, found various objects- junk, pennies, 1 nickle, and 2 matchbox cars- must have been my sons, not very old and they look like some that he has had. The one question I have for everyone is: our older objects/coins deeper than newer things? Does that make sense? Most of the pennies I have found are not very old between 1993-2000, but they were about 4 inches deep- so obviously coins and such sink into the ground after they have been dropped, also the two matchbox cars I have found around the same depth 4inches. So does that mean older items that have been dropped long ago are deeper?! I'm still learning how to use the detector, and it has been fun -I'm eager to get beyond our yard! Having two kids, work and a husband it is going to be hard to find the time to get out there and dig!!

You know that makes sense, but it isn't always so. I found an 1897 indian head today that was only about 2 inches deep and I've found other old coins that were in the same depth range including half dollars and large cents . But saying that I've also found newer coins 6 or 7 inches deep. I think some of it has to do with the amount of traffic maybe pushing the coins down deeper but I'm not real sure. I also just recently got a 250 and I'm really enjoying it, hope you do too. I can relate on the lack of time, always seems to be something I need to get done or somewhere the kids need run to. Oh well I'll take what I can get. You could always take the kids to the local park or playground and practise while they play, just an idea. HH Craig

Dogbit-I do have plans on going to the parks, beaches, and school playgrounds around here and I have many places that I want to check out,one problem I have is that my son is in a wheelchair so going to playgrounds and such aren't always the best places for him.
Free2Dtect- I can't wait to find something that I can brag about!!!

Hi Indy and welcome aboard and to a great hobby! The older coins can be found at all different depths! When it rains dirt washes and can cover some coins deeper than others and at the same time can bring some closer to the surface. If there was any dirt pushed around, this could leave the coins anywhere at different depths. Over the years topsoil builds up...just many factors can contribute to depths of coins. Just my thoughts.

Detecting would be a great hobby for you and your son to do together! I have a cousin that is in the similar situation...He loves seeing what I find! Now if I can just get him to get out and go along with me! I think he would really enjoy it!

Hope to see some of your finds!

Thanks for all the replies, We all went to the park today -found absolutely nothing!! I was picking up lots of junk on the coin mode so I switched to relic mode low sensitivity, lots of beeps I would dig and then nothing, no more beeps and not even junk? Any thoughts? My son does like to detect, both of my kids love to search through the dirt to see what we hit on, most of the time they tell me I'm not digging in the right place!!LOL My son wants to run the detector but his wheelchair sets it off alot. I have alot of learning to do yet! My husband wants me to go to this abandoned house he knows about, I want to go BUT, last time I went in the weeds to detect I got poison oak on my arms so I'm not going in any weeds for awhile! Still very eager to find something old!!!
