Default Noob in TX - any info would help

Hi all-

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've been looking for any type of information regarding MD'ing, prospecting, arrowhead/fossil/rock hunting, etc. sites that are hopefully not terribly far from me (South Texas), that would be suitable for maybe a 'taste' of the hobby. My son's 14th birthday is coming up and I thought it would be nice to pack up the family and take a mini-vacation roaming around such places for his birthday. We saw a Discovery Channel show on this stuff that really caught his attention and I'd like to provide him the opportunity to further his interests. What a great way to learn about history! Problem is that I'm having trouble finding much info at all for Texas and I really know nothing what-so-ever about this. A good beginners website would probably be ideal to start with... I would like also to pick up some books on the subject(s) if anyone can make any recommendations.

Thanks in advance for the help- it's much appreciated.

Hi jmgr, welcome and nice to meet you. You might want to pickup a copy of Rockhounding Texas by Melinda Crow and Gem Trails of Texas by Brad L. Cross. They have various locals listed to go hunting for fossils and rocks. I hope it works out and good luck to you.
