Default Advice for a total newbie?

Hi! I am totally new to treasure hunting and metal detecting and am grateful to have found this forum.

My husband is looking to find a metal detector with a very specific purpose. His family is from a very rural area in another country. There has long been talk in his family of treasure -- most likely gold coins -- buried by his great-grandfather in the little village where my husband was born. Before my father-in-law died last year, he verified the rumors and told my brother-in-law generally where it was. My husband and his brother want to buy a metal detector and take it back to their village to try to find the stash.

All we know is that it is buried about 1.75 to 2 meters down (around 5-6 feet) in a wooded, mountainous area. The area is supposedly pretty dangerous in terms of both animal and human predators. I assume that this depth and type of terrain would require different equipment than someting buried in shallow sand.

So what do we buy? Can you more experienced searchers recommend a particular type of metal detector? Are there particular features we should look for, or particular specs?

I turn to you because I'm afraid that, without proper advice, the two of them are going to spend a fortune on something that isn't up to the task.

Me? I'm still skeptical, but I never say never. If they go into this, I want them to at least do it with the right equipment.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Guera

Guera,

I have never used one of these before, but I think you would need to use what it called a two box detector. Depending on the size of the item you are looking for, it may be able to find it. Take a look at the link below for an example of a two box. Perhaps there is someone else on the forum that can give you more information.

Good luck,

Hi and I ahve some experience on this subject. I have sold several detectors to look for justthis type of material. You will need a two box detector. Give me a call and we can talk about the specifics.
