Hi. I'm new to treasure hunting, just purchased a Whites XLT, and have collected some coins at playground and beaches, but would like help to find other ways to set my XLT to be able to better detect jewelry. I have detected what shows to be a ring, but I got aluminum foil or bottle caps. I understand I can program the XLT to reject these and better the gold/jewelry detection. Can someone help me please???? Thank you Ralph, Miami, Florida

I've used the xlt for a long time and foil usualy gives a more "broken " signal I've found but i still dig them. I have been fooled thinking it's foil and turned out to be a ring. As chitown said "dig the targets", and it will pay off sometime.

Hi Ralph,
Congrats on joining the hobby and using an XLT. There is no magic bullet for finding any particular type target and it's really hard to explain the parameters of what to dig. Finding jewelry is basically a percentage game, if your at the beach and dig every foil thru zinc reading your percentages are higher to find jewelry than at a public park wheras for the most part you will be digging pulltabs, foil, canslaw and zinc pennies etc. You have a better chance of finding jewelry inland at a mulched playground ,soccer field or sand volleyball court etc. than in the lawn areas. I agree with chitown41 in regards to discrimination, the more you disc or notch out especially on the lower end the less chances of finding the better pieces of jewelry as most of the diamond rings are smaller ladies rings that may read foil, nickel. You can only decide what to dig no matter what program you use. The best piece of advice anyone can give is learn your machine and don't be afraid to dig. Good Luck HH Bill |
