Default Silent Signals

OK all you seasoned veterans - I have a question for you. I have noticed that when I swing my Prizm V sometimes the needle will jump but there will be no beep in my ear phones. Does this mean that I have the ear phone volumn set too low for me to hear the beep? Should I dig these signals? You guys talk about hearing the low or faint signals but I only hear one kind. The same tone all the time and the same intensity. Is it my ear phones? Is the Prizm V capable of emitting different strength of tones? So far I have not found any old coins so curious about this. JoAnne

HI Joanne....

I'd have posted sooner, but was changing email accounts. I got that situated now and can post again...

My 6000 NEVER gives an audible tone in discriminate mode on deep targets. I am watching the meter's needle. When I pass the coil over a coin...the needle will go to...say..."quarter"......and stay there. I move the search coil away from the suspected target, detune by squeezing and releasing the trigger and re-check the area. If I can get the same meter reading readily, and it is repeatable from different directions, then I pull the trigger in (which makes the detector operate in "all metal" mode)......and then...and not until then, will I get any kind of audio tone. It can be anything from a loud blast...which usually indicates something shallow and/or large....all the way to a barely discernible audio tone which is not as concise in location if the target is smaller and/or deeper. I center up the audio tone moving the coil east to west and then north to south, making an imaginary "X marks the spot".....and dig.

A coin over 4-5 inches deep.....while searching in discriminate mode.....makes no audible tone at all on the 6000. If you're using one of these machines and only digging targets that are audible in "Disc" mode.....Thank You. You've left most of the deep silver for me

Wyatt

Like boobie, i'm not familiar with the Prizm's but most target ID detectors will give an audio response to all accepted targets and will be silent on disriminated targets but you'll still get a visual target response.

If you do an air test and swipe a coin at say 1" and swipe a coin at 6" or 8" you'll hear the difference in signal strength and perhaps could place a few coins at variable depths and valuations in your yard to check the response.

Some deep signals may only be a blip not even a tone blip but just a blip but repeatable. You just have to hear one and dig it to know for sure but once you do you'll never forget it . You gotta be focused to notice some deepies but mostly be at the right place. HH Bill

Thanks guys for the information. Maybe that is why I have not found any deep coins. And, No Wyatt, I am not leaving them for you. I will go back and retrace my steps and pick up all the ones I left behind.

Hello JoAnne; I have a Prizm III which is the same as your V except not as many features, but operates the same. When your in disc. mode, anything you have disc. out, (such as nail, pulltab, etc.) When your coil passes over that nail, pulltab, etc. your pointer or needle will show that target, but will not give you a signal or tone.

JoAnne; Here in Missouri, when you get 4"-5" deep you hit rock so I haven't found much deeper, but I know the Prizm will go deeper. But I can tell you that you have a very good MD, and it will do just about anything you want it to once you learn it. Just keep working with it, and keep asking all the questions you can think of. It may take some time, but once you do learn what it's telling you, it will become easy for you, and you'll start finding lots of stuff. Again, the PrizmV you have is a great MD. (you made a wise choice.) I'll do some checking around, and if I can find any info about the PrizmV, I'll let you know. Good luck.

Thanks John - I am beginning to learn that perhaps I should not Disc out anything. Today went to an old site where there used to be train station. All I found was old trash. Pieces of scrap metal etc. Some days you just have to disc out the junk. JoAnne
