There are a few differences between the GTAx 550 and the ACE 250. The differences are - GTAx 550 has an adjustable audio threshold, uses 8 AA batteries, Hip mount battery pack, and last mode switching. The ACE 250 has a tone ID, uses 4 AA batteries and has a continuous coin depth indicator, up to 6 inches deep. The ACE 250 has been getting excellent reviews and is a great entry level machine. You can go to Garrett's website to compare the different machines.

Hi Bill and welcome to the TQ bunch. I have to say it is really hard to beat the price for the Ace 250. It has many features for the price and it works very well. It also is a nice looking machine. There are a number of nice accessories available for it too. I would choose the 250 hands down. The weather cover from Garrett is now available also. I sell the 250 for 214.00 just above the minimum authorized dealer pricing. I would very much like to be of service to you Bill. Give me a call if you need anything. God Bless Bill and best to you.

Well I took the plunge and purchased the Garrett Ace 250, from a close by dealer ( Brantford ). I am looking forward to getting into the field and trying it out.

Thanks again for all your input.
Respectlfully.

Congrats on your purchase of the Ace 250, Bill! I am sure you are going to spend hours upon hours of detecting with it... I suggest setting the machine to ALL METAL mode and digging everything you come across... this will help tell you what tones lead to trash and what tones are more for coins, etc... It is a good way to "learn" your machine. I hope this may be of some help to you.
