The only useful purpose for the visual icons in my opinion is for persons new to the detector to become familiar with the target zones until the VDI #'s become second nature .However nothing is guaranteed accurate as Pete mentioned. HH Bill

Theres several out there like the whites DFX, Xlt, that shows a picture, whether its a nail, a quarter, a penny, a bottle cap, but after several times using it, the novelty of relying on a visual picture goes away. You start to rely more on sound, the +/- number and a signgraph, which'll determine whether its ferrous (iron) or non-ferrous material (coins).
The visual 'icons' aren't all what its cracked up to be, though they're pretty good, I hardly even look at that display anymore, so I wouldn't use that as my determining factor when buying a detector.

Default picture idea

I guess what Im looking for isnt a metal detector but a machine that takes a under the ground picture and shows you whats there.

after a couple years digging bullets, nails, pop tops, etc. I need to find a better place to swing, when you detect the poorest county in your state. It makes you understand what life must have been like back then IM still at the point of fascination when discovering these items of little value. I guess that comes from with-in, as you remove an old rusty nail from the soil, thinking if it found this it can find a real target.

The detector that you talked about, taking a picture of what is underground doesn't exist at least not for normal retail folks. Some govt. agency might have one but its cost to the general public would be cost prohibitive. A friend of mine asked Charles Garrett bak in the 1980's if such a detector was possible. He said that it could be made but it it's cost would be like $25,000.00 or so at that time! Cost now could be much more than that! I heard that NASA has a device that can find treasure on Earth from a Sattellite high up in space!! Joe

I've seen in Lost Treasure magazine there is a type of detector that can "see" into the ground. It is called the FS-Future Series. It states:
  • Measuring instruments of newest technology
  • Graphical representation of the underground in 3D
  • Detection of targets such as gold, silver, bronze
  • Location of water deposits & cavities
  • Locating position and depth
  • Discrimination of metals
It attaches to some form of monitor and the website is OKM Ortungstechnik GmbH - Ground Penetrating Instruments GPR and Metal Detector ( Bodenradar, Future, Localizer 3000, exp 4000, Georadar) Metal detectors Says it is going to be patented in 128 countries in the world. Made in Germany.

I typed the website address in the previous post as a normal web address, however once I submitted the post and viewed it, I noticed that the underlined website link is not what I typed... It is much longer, however if you click on it, you WILL be taken to the website that the FS-Future Series metal detector is located on... don't know why that happened...
