I am new to this site, and this is my first post. I am just a little excited about today. I recently purchased a minelab xterra70, and bought a Tesoro for my brother. We have both have had detectors in the past, but haven't "beeped" in over 10 years.
Yesterday I got permission to detect territory that as far as I know has never been checked. There is an arena at the fairgrounds nearby that was built in 1955. It is indoors and is used frequently for dog shows, horse shows, bull riding, boxing, etc. The bleachers are made of wood, and have small cracks between the boards as most do. Below is dirt, and is inclosed and locked, with no access without permission. My brother and I checked the inside of this arena itself about 12 years ago with good success. I found a WW1 reunion medal, along with several old coins. The person who ran the fairgrounds for several years said that when he poured some new pier blocks about 20 years ago, he picked up several coins on top of the ground, under the bleachers, and is sure there is a lot more there. VIRGIN TERRITORY! We will need to bring our own lights and I'm sure there will be lots of spiders etc., but that won't deter us. I will make a post later to let you know what we found! Paul |

I just got back from the arena. It was dark and cramped. I was on my knees with lots of webs overhead for most of the 2 hours I was there. It was rocky and full of junk. Pull tabs, bottle caps, foil, nails etc. They also store stuff under there, so only about 1/2 of the area was available. I still have one more area I will search at a later date. Luckily my discriminator was working well, and I was only digging the better targets, which were at most 2 inches down. I came away with 4 quarters, 6 dimes and 7 pennies, the oldest of which was a 1972. I also found a sterling silver ring and an inexpensive gold band. Not bad for 2 hours. My brother came away with a similar haul of coins, but no jewelry.
This weekend I'll be heading to the coast for some beach hunting at an appropriately named place, Gold Beach. Paul |
