Question Travel with detector?

Hi everyone! I've been lurking the MDing sites for a few weeks now. My hubby and I are anxiously awaiting our Garrett Ace 250. We will be trying it out around our neighborhood but plan to take it to Florida in April. Any hints on travelling with the detector and equipment? I was thinking we would have to carry it on with us and pack most of the equipment. Thanks for your thoughts.

I am heading to Florida and had the same question.

You have to contact the airlines. NWA will not allow a Metal Detector as a carry on.

If you read the TSA rules you can put it in your luggage. It does not say Metal Detectors specifically but you can pack weapons in your Check-In luggage so I would think a metal detector should be okay.

Here is the link to the site.

Thanks for the replies. I have tried to email TSA with a specific question regarding detectors but no response yet. I will contact my airline as well.

Well I got my answer. I called the airline (USA3000) and they said they were unsure so the supervisor called the TSA directly and was told it would be no problem.

I recently flew from Texas to Alaska (AA) with my detector. I just broke it down & packed my clothes around it & sent it thru in my luggage. It changed planes several times on the trip & worked fine.....still does. The people that checked the bags had no problem with it being in the luggage at all.

You may be interesting in this email from the TSA. There is a good chance that they will not allow you to take it on board.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your e-mail.

The Transportation Security Administration's current security screening procedures require all carry-on luggage and accessible property be screened before passengers take them onboard an aircraft. Regardless of whether an item is on the prohibited or permitted items list, the Transportation Security Officers (TSO's) have discretion to prohibit an individual from carrying an item through the screening checkpoint or onboard an aircraft if the item poses a security threat.

Therefore, TSA security screening personnel make the final decision on whether to permit items like a NAME OF ITEM into the sterile area of the airport. Should you need additional assistance, feel free to contact us at toll free 866-289-9673.

Please visit our website at www.tsa.gov for additional information about TSA. We continue to add new information and encourage you to check the website frequently for updated information.

We hope this information is helpful.
