Requesting permission
Here is a draft of an email I am going to send to one of the owners of a commercial real estate firm that is bulldozing hundreds of acres of woods to build trucking distribution centers:
Dear Mr. XXXXX,
I am writing in regard to the undeveloped portion of the XXXXXXX Distribution Center on Hwy XXX. I live a few miles down the road from this site. As I have passed back and forth past your property, I have noticed that there are a couple of old homes still partially standing in the woods. I am writing to seek your permission to be able to enter upon your property for the purpose of looking for any relics that may have been left behind over time. I am an avid collector and amateur historian, and would love the opportunity to investigate these old home sites, both visually, and with my metal detector.
Obviously at some point this land will be cleared to expand the existing construction already under way and completed on your property. I would very much appreciate this opportunity, before these buildings are demolished.
If liability is a concern to you, under the US Federal ESIGN law, this email would serve as my e-signature, releasing yourself and *name of company*, from any and all liability in the event of death or injury while I am on your property.
I appreciate you taking the time to consider my request, and look forward to a response in the affirmative.
Best Regards,
*Me*
So, how does it look? Any suggestions? Should I remove the whole liability paragraph? That should be the ONLY reason he would say no, so I am trying to eliminate it from the get-go.
