Thank you everyone for the warm welcome, this looks like a great place to learn about the hobby. First thing we are going to have to do is throw away our old detector which doesn't work very well for a new intro-detector. Anything good out there for about $200?

Default Garrett Ace250

Is about the best you can do in that price range. I'm sure there are going to be a bunch of responses from other TQ members to back me up. Seems like Garrett knew what he was doing when he made this one.

Thank you, I remember we bought a book on detecting which I think was written by Garrett, and my wife and I were quite disappointed since it seemed like nothing more than a long advertisement for Garret products. But, with that said, if they make a great entry product, I will have to give them a shot.

Hi Bob. Welcome to the TQ family
i would look at the Garrett Ace250 . It is around your price point and the best starter detector on the market today. If you need any help at all please let me know. Thanks for joining up .

Been a while since I posted, but I wanted to ask for advice. I am looking to by my wife a gift, and I know she would love a good metal detector. So, I am thinking in the $500 price range. I was thinking the ACE 250, but do you guys/gals have any suggestions for something better in the $500 price range, or is the ACE 250 the best choice?

Also, do you know of any good dealers in the Reno area?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Chuck,

Thank you for the response. Which one would you suggest for a newb just getting started? Any of these easier to use then the others? Any of them better for locating small fragments of gold?

Of the three, for "small fragments (nuggets)" of gold, you would be better off with the X-Terra 50, since it has the ability to work at 18.75kHz along with the optional 5"x10", DD, 18.75kHz gold nugget coil, which can be seen at: Treasure Hut - MINELAB 5"X10" 18.75kHz COIL. The higher frequency is MUCH more sensitive to small gold targets. The X-Terra 30 only works at 7.5kHz.

However, if you are going to do much gold nugget hunting, and even though it's a bit higher than your stated budget, you might really want to look at the X-Terra 70 with the optional 5"x10", DD, 1875kHz gold nugget coil. The X-Terra 70 has an AMAZINGLY AWESOME GOLD PROSPECTING mode as well as the normal Coin/Jewelry and Relics modes. You can see the X-Terra 70 at: Treasure Hut - MINELAB X-TERRA 70. You can read a very convincing and enlightening series of comments on the X-Terra 70 and it's field testing at:

All four of these detectors, have short learning curves compared to most, are light weight and easy on the arm and wrist, and are able to see quite deep into the soil.

Attachment 12421 - X-Terra 70
Just to be sure I understand correctly, I would need to buy 3 different coils for the x-terra 70 in order to use it at all three frequencies?
