Chuck,

Thank you for the response. Which one would you suggest for a newb just getting started? Any of these easier to use then the others? Any of them better for locating small fragments of gold?

Default Hello Bob...

...and you are welcome. Of the three, for "small fragments (nuggets)" of gold, you would be better off with the X-Terra 50, since it has the ability to work at 18.75kHz along with the optional 5"x10", DD, 18.75kHz gold nugget coil, which can be seen at: Treasure Hut - MINELAB 5"X10" 18.75kHz COIL. The higher frequency is MUCH more sensitive to small gold targets. The X-Terra 30 only works at 7.5kHz.

However, if you are going to do much gold nugget hunting, and even though it's a bit higher than your stated budget, you might really want to look at the X-Terra 70 with the optional 5"x10", DD, 1875kHz gold nugget coil. The X-Terra 70 has an AMAZINGLY AWESOME GOLD PROSPECTING mode as well as the normal Coin/Jewelry and Relics modes. You can see the X-Terra 70 at: Treasure Hut - MINELAB X-TERRA 70. You can read a very convincing and enlightening series of comments on the X-Terra 70 and it's field testing at:

All four of these detectors, have short learning curves compared to most, are light weight and easy on the arm and wrist, and are able to see quite deep into the soil.

Just to be sure I understand correctly, I would need to buy 3 different coils for the x-terra 70 in order to use it at all three frequencies?

Default No...

...it comes standard with the 7.5kHz, and Minelab is running a special price on the detector including the 18.75kHz. The 3kHz would have to be purchased separately, but that isn't something that I would recommend, as the 7.5kHz will do just fine for relics as well. There really ins't any need to purchase the 3kHz coil, at least not any time soon.
