Default Hey There!

Thought I'd better introduce myself before I just jump in the middle of the hunt. :) My name's Janiece, I'm from IL, and I'm getting ready to get reacquainted with MDing.

In the early 80s, I had a MD but I don't even remember what brand it was. It was white, bright green, and black. I liked it even if I never brought home anything amazing. It gave me some fun and I remember by grandpa getting quite a kick out of watching me in the yard digging up various junk - most notably an big old butcher knife. Now how did THAT get lost? Well, grandpa's been gone for several years now but I'll get much enjoyment out of digging and scrounging. And I'll just bet I'll think of him often while I'm out hunting.

All of those years ago, there was something I came across but didn't get to dig and I'm sure looking forward going back after it. I'll tell you all the story of it one of these times. Picture it: a crazy woman with a plastic bag on her foot (I'd just had surgery) walking around in the rain, muttering and poking at the ground. No wonder that cop was so interested in what I was doing! Hope he's not around when I go back to find that bucket of treasure! Hope it's still there and it's not just an old bucket. :)

Anyway, nice to meet you all! I'm looking forward to going out to buy a new detector tomorrow and I might get my dad to buy one too because he's been watching the Discovery channel or something that has him in a fever. :)

Thanks for the welcome, BigBill! I definitely plan on "digging it all" for a while. My first venture will be in the yard I think. Many years ago there was a house and dairy here and I am trying to pin down exactly where the buildings were. Until I get a plan I'll just wander around the place getting acquainted with my machine (whatever that will be!)

Welcome to TQ, Janiece! I liked your intro. Some nice memories there. Things have changed a bit since you were last hunting, especially now that we all have a place to meet and share stories on-line.

You are starting at the right time of the year and hope that you can find that bucket!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone! Things sure have changed since I detected long ago. My tool kit at that time was a garden trowel, some plastic bags, a nail apron, a small shovel and an ice pick with the tip rounded off. Those things haven't changed all that much but boy the electronics have sure taken off! I'd for sure like to have a hand held GPS unit but I'm getting way ahead of myself there. lol

I haven't decided for certain on a detector yet. I have a shoulder problem and the weight and balance of the machine will likely have a lot of influence on the purchase. I was sort of leaning toward a Prizm III but am not set on anything yet. Suggestions are always welcome!

I'm glad to see there are some other folks from IL here. And hey, Free2Detct, I live not far from where there used to be a little village called Swisher, IL. Not sure how much info you might find on it. Of course since this is corn and bean land it's all plowed over with naught but a little wooden sign to indicate that it was once there. There's Swisher Hill that's still there, too but it's just one of those historical names that carried over and as far as I can determine wasn't actually at the village site.

Anyway, nice to meet you all. I'm off work today so I'm going to take my mom to some garage sales and then go to look over some detectors.
