Question Still a new member

Hi everyone, I finally bought my md and I think its quite nice. Its digital and can be used in water. We have a cottage on a river so I wanted to spend the extra money for that feature. I am confused about the whole process though. Ha. I am not sure which setting to use, for coins, relics, jewelry, etc. I wouldn't mind finding any/all of them. I also am not sure where to dig when it beeps and when I dig I don't want to destroy the area. I know I'm a mess. It's embarrassing. Any tips would be appreciated that can narrow this down for me while I am "hunting". I am having fun but my husband says at the rate I'm going we will not have a backyard left. Thanks, Debbie

Hi Debbie and welcome! I'm new here myself, but this seems like a really nice and knowledgable group of people here.

Your owner's manual should give you some tips on pinpointing your finds. And I think a lot of it comes from practice and getting to know your machine. Don't know what kind of MD you have but you'll probably find some tips on using it in the threads here.

I have spent 2 whole days reading and have learned a lot here already! I wish I didn't have to go back to work today because I'd read some more.

Default Thank you

Yes, I've been reading on here and have learned quite a bit. I guess it's just practice I need like anything else. My machine is a Lone Star Bounty Hunter and I paid 200. I am going out to search again later today.

Welcome to TQ, Debbie! Sounds like the detecting bug bit you! One word of caution: only the coil on your detector is waterproof, not the electronics so don't get them wet.

One suggestion: get a gold ring, a silver ring, an aluminum pull tab and one of all the common coins. Find a piece of lawn that is metal free by sweeping your detector over it first then lay out the items about a foot apart. Observe what your readout tells you about each one, especially the aluminum and the gold.

Try a pass at 2" above, another at 4" and yet another at 6" above to check the sensitivity of the unit.

Once you have learned the readouts for the different items, you will find more quality goods.

I don't hunt on land so maybe someone else can offer you some tips on that.

Good luck and don't worry, your hubby will change his mind once he sees you bringing home some nice goodies.

Good luck!

All good ideas so far for you to try. Something I thought of , to practice your digging and pinpointing techniques, you can try sandy areas, playgrounds with the woods chips, even an area with just patches of grass..like in a wooded surrounding. That way you can dig and practice and if you don't dig the perfect plug it should be less noticable in these type of areas.
Good Luck.

Default Hello 2scooterchic

In time you will be getting better and finding more...the key is what alot of folks are saying, read and practice...but listen to what it is telling you by the tones and the readings...soon you will hear and see by the readings that it is trash or worth digging up...but from the start just dig everything and listen and watch....good luck...
