Default Hello

New to metal detectors and detecting, bought my first detector last week, a low end model Famous Trails MD7030.
I have been learning how to use it in a nearby local park, at first all I came up with was surface pop tabs and bottle caps, and an pieces of metal, but some experimenting with the adjustments and learning how it works properly started me on finding some good stuff, to date I have found:
4 quarters
3 dimes
3 nickels
8 pennies
a set of keys
a silver hair broach

Being new at this I am not actually sure where, besides the park, to go hunting, so I was hoping i could get some tips, suggestions and ideas, plus some help on how to improve my detecting abilities.

I also use to have a friend, whom is gone now, that had a metal detector that he used to hunt meteor rocks with. He did not have a huge collection, but a fairly nice one, I was wondering if anyone here has hunted meteor rocks before.

Thanks for any help, and look forward to sharing!

Eric,
Yakima, Washington

Great to have ya! Some impressive finds. I would say they trump my early finds which was about a bucket of nails and a sparkplug. You will be a pro in no time.

Default Oh Yeah

As far as other places to hunt. I'm sure you'll get ideas from here such as the beach, playgrounds, old picnic groves, athletic fields & such. There is a great book " How To Find Treasure " by Dick Stouts that is very handy. I believe it cost $14.95. As far as doing better with your detector, Reread the Manual if you still have it & Practice and Practice somemore. It doesn't matter if your machine is New or Old as long as you LISTEN and LEARN What your detector is telling you. Good Luck & HH.

Default Thanks Everyone

And thanks for the advice, Tinman, I actually had to download the manual from the manufacturers website, all I got with the detector with a quickstart guide and setup instructions. After reading over the manual, I see I did a few things backwards, I did not fine tune it when getting to an area or practice with it in my yard before using it right away! And I was not 'sweeping' properly, I was moving way to fast and moving it is arcs over the areas. I am amazed that I actually found anything!
Well, now I know and can get better. Everyone has to learn from experience though!

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to TQ Other places you can try would be : abdoned homes or businesses that have been torn down, if you're looking for Old items, the older the homes the better chance of finding older coins and relics. Also check out the TQ http://www.treasurequestxlt.com/detecting/
alot of good info there by Free2Detect.
Good Luck
