Default ?- 1st post, do most mders look only for coins

so it seems that most detectorists only look for coins, based on the posts here and on other websites. is this true?

just got my first detector since 5th grade. that first one was a radio shack special circa 1985, now i have a bounty hunter tracker IV. i own a farmhouse built in 1850 in vermont. i could care less about coins, i would much rather find relics from my houses past than a few modern quarters.

my first time (and only so far since the batteries died that day) out on my yard i found a pull tab, some chickenwire, a few nails and screws, a 1974 penny, a strange lock jaw clamp, and a short candlestick. i will post pics in a few days.

is anybody more intersted in history than coins? i set my machine to find any metal, i don't care about finding 45 cents, i'd rather find some history around my house. what is the fascination with finding pennies when you could find true historical mementos that show the past of a place?

Default Treasures

Hello and welcome to TQ. I can't answer for every one but I am not just a metal detector I am a treasure hunter. Treasures come in all shapes and sizes. Yes I am happy with coins.45 cents is more than I had when I started. But when 45 cents turn into $273.95 after about a year not including silver. that makes me very happy. But I also hunt relics, jewelry , arrow heads and just about every thing my detector screams for. I hope you find lots including coins. Good luck and have fun after all thats what hobbies are for.

Coins are cool, surely; far better than pull tabs or aluminum foil. However, for me, I love finding those other real unique things. My favorite finds include old rings (sliver and gold), charms, buttons, button covers, an extremely old pocket knife, and a Manhatten Project era dog license -- really cool since I found it here in Los Alamos, NM, the home of the Manhatten Project.

Coins are cool, but it's the age and history behind them -- and everything else I find -- that I love. Finding a coin like a Spanish eight real certainly cool, but is all the more enhanced when it's found along El Camino Real. I love pondering how those things I find ever got to where I found them...

Happy detecting!

Hey gremlin, nice to see ya here!!!! I very much like the coins, I get reimbursed for the money I spent on my detector, just depends on where I am hunting on what kind of treasure I set out to find....I really love it when I turn up a few older coins...cause of the history behind them...that really gets the ole treasure hunting blood a pumpin!!! I really love turning up old relics....Just the excitement from seeing something from the past that you don't see or use in todays every day usage is just awesome to me....If I am in a good area for rings that is what I set out to find....if I am at an old homesite...heck I dig almost everything....of course I like my copper silver and brass, first and then I will go back and see what else might turn up from the past....History (Old relics really are what makes me jump for joy)...especially that costume jewelry....not sure on the value of some of it...But they are my most treasured items......Coins seem to be the easiest to find and turn up for me!!!! So they would be a common item to find......as was posted above and of course...pulltabs have to be the number one find for me, cause there are so many....History is my main goal!!!!!!! But remember...Some of us that may not have just a ton of money rolling around.....That change adds up and helps pay for a few items that help in the hobby, or you can use it in other ways...as for fuel or maybe entrants for places to hunt that might cost....So clad has its +'s all the way!!!! And as was said....each and everyone is different and a treasure, is always going to be to each and everyones own preference...so if you are proud of it.....show it off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Heck I love my old axe head finds....they may look in bad shape but I have posted them in the past and someone might think what so exciting about an ole axehead....Well just think about all that history behind it and hard work...How it got where I found it...Wonder what was going on at the time it was dropped.....Just exciting thinking about the history behind the relics and the time period...what was happening in the world at that time and what was everyday life like back then....just amazes me!!!!!
Love those old Relics...for sure!!!!!!!!

Default Hi Gremlin

Howdy and welcome to TQ. Guess I dig up any consistant signal. You just never know. I had a signal that looked like just another penny on my detector meter once and it turned out to be a very old pocket watch. Guess this made a believer out of me. So yeah I dig a lot of junk but every now and then you hit on something pretty cool. Old coins are fun to find just cuz you can see a date on them and know right away how old they are. But if you ask me what I like finding most, I am going to tell you old tokens. If you ask me what I would like to find the most, I am going to tell you a gold coin. Hasn't happen yet but you just never know.....

I'm fairly new here myself and have only found a few coins, which is fun to find, but for me it is seeing what is underfoot out of eye sight. Best find I have found to date, and was only a couple of days ago was some flint lock musket balls.
Based on some ideas I got from others here, I did start to keep track of my finds. I got one of those weekly planners from the dollar store and for every day I go out, I write down whatever I find and where I went and found it. Others I am sure have their own methods of keeping track.
Best thing though I learned, was to have fun! No matter what you are doing it for, always have fun.

Welcome to the forum Gremlin !!!

I dig what ever comes out of the ground, lately it has been pull tabs and then some more pull tabs !!! But, I figure when I get a chance to upgrade my detector, I will be able to hit those same spots only with fewer pull tabs !!
