Default New to the Site...New to Metal Detecting

Hi, my name is Riki and I'm in Chester County, Pennsylvania. I've had an interest in metal detecting for quite some time but never pursued it. My kids all got together and bought me a metal detector for my birthday (this Friday) and I've been trying it out in my back field just to get the hang of listening to the beeps and reading the guages. I've unearthed several soda cans and quite a few railroad spikes (an old railroad bed runs across my property - the tracks were disassembled quite a few years ago) but we're having fun. The only disconcerting (or maybe troublesome) thing is sometimes I'll get a constant high "ping" over an area and it'll say it's only 8-10 inches down....but we dig and dig and though the ping/depth remains constant we find nothing. Out of curiosity my husband/son dug down 5 feet the other night before giving up. Does this happen often or is it the quality of my machine?

Anyway...would love any hints on places to go and are there any restrictions on places...I understand about private property and national parks...anything else?

Thanks...looking forward to "meeting" everyone and learning from you all.

Welcome to TQ!!! You found the best forum EVER The first thing that came to mind about the false signal is that it could be that the sensitivity is set too high. Back it off a couple of notches and see how that goes. It may be that the soil is mineralized? I'm sure someone more experienced will be able to tell you for sure. It will help if we know what kind of machine you have.

WELCOME

Wink High Ping

Welcome and there cou8ld be several reasons for the ping and depth issue. I guess we need to know first what detector you have, and secondly any settings you had in place. Large metal objects may be located 1-2 down even with a cheap metal detector. The ground may be contaiminated with iron dust known as rail dust from the wearing of the tracks, brakes, and rails. Typically iron is a low tone on most detectors though. Let me know and welcome again! Peter
