I'm a newbie, too - in Eastern Pa - and I've got two of the three you mentioned on my property, too - old railroad track beds and old foundations in the middle of woods! Guess Eastern Pa isn't much different from Western....except for the coal dumps!

Mach, I'm from Somerset, PA and just got into this hobby of Metal Detecting in April. I can only tell you it has been great! The hunting and you never know what your going to find. Just think you could uncover something that may have been in the ground a hundred or more years. All of my life I've been a Hunter and now I can hunt for stuff when there isn't anything in season to hunt. Its all about the adventure.

As you read over this site you will see that there are alot of very skilled metal detectorist on this site. Listen up to what they say because they have been around the block and alot of them are making great finds what seems like an everyday occurrence. Check out Boobie and Mr. Silver they are right here in PA and they find silver coins like they were acorns (well maybe not that easy) but they sure find them.

If you ever need someone to hunt with just let me know.

to TQ.! You picked the best site to learn about this hobby. Hope you have some Cold Compresses ready cuz I have a feeling your gonna come down with a Fever. I"m in Tower City PA. The Coal & Iron & Rock here just make it a little more challenging & if you can dig here you can dig anywhere. There are a lot of good finds waiting for you.
