Default New to metal detecting

I live in La. I am new to this hobby. I bought a X-terra 70. I think it will take me forever to finally learn what I need to know and how to use it though. I have found a few dollars in newer coins but I'm having fun. If anyone can give me a few pointers, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

If you can ,stay in all metal or Pattern 1 but do not discriminate above this,I have Threshold at about 9 but that is to your own preference,I use 4 tones and tracking, but really it all depends on where you are detecting, type of ground.
Keep reading the Manual and LISTENING to the sounds don't rely on the display practise, practise and practise some more.
Good Hunting.

OK, but I haven't gotten that coil yet. I have the other 3 though. I am looking forward to getting that coil. Will it still pick up a bunch of the trash too? Or is it specifically geared to gold. Sorry, I hadn't read up on that coil too much yet. Was going to worry about that when I got it.

MrMorph - What part of Louisiana are you in? I live near New Iberia. You will always find your fair share of trash with any metal detector, however you definately will find lots of coins and other goodies as well. The X-Terra 70 gets awesome reviews and I am sure you are going to enjoy it. Take your time swinging your coil - never rush or you will pass up tons of good stuff. Also, if you take different denominations of coins as well as common trash items such as bottle caps and pull tabs, etc., you can see how your machine responds to each individual item. This will help you to understand your machine just a little bit better. Practice and patience will help you graduate to an awesome metal-detectorist! Good luck!
