Hello all,
My name is Bob and I live in Punta Gorda, Florida. (Yes the home of Hurricane Charley!!!!) I am interested in doing some beach and underwater hunting as well as on the dry land but am not sure what is the best detector to buy. I have been looking at three units and need your advise. The first one is the Minelab Excalibur 800 or 1000. This seems nice but a bit spendy. The next unit is the Fisher 1280X Aquanaut 8" or 10.5". This seems good because the headphones and the coil are hardwired to help eliminate leaks. (Salt water is not good) The third unit is the Tesoro Sand Shark or Tiger Shark. All of these units seem to do the job but I am not sure what is what whith any of the units available. Any input you can give me will be much appreciated.

Thanks much,

Bob

Default Hi Robert

Welcome to TQ. I Have a White's Surfmaster PI. & I Love it, I will be getting anoter beach & water machine in the near Future & I'm probably going with the TIGER SHARK But I'm also leaning a little towards the Whites SURFMASTER PI PRO. Have NO Experience with the Fisher or EXcalipur But I Love my Tesoro's and you really can't beat the LIFE TIME Warranty. Chuck would be the man to talk to 7 he'll dial you right in on your Specific needs. You came to an AWESOME Forum and You will never Regret dealing with the Sponsors here.

Good Luck & HH

Welcome to TQ, Robert. It is difficult to give you specific advice because every machine has its merits.

I think the best thing I could do for you is to suggest that you research the four main types of machine. The Pulse Induction (PI), the single Very Low Frequency (VLF), the dual VLF and the multiple/broadband frequency machines.

Talk to local hunters to find out how much "junk" is in the water and do more research.

Another important consideration is the sand scoop. If you plan on hunting in salt water, I recommend that you invest in either an heavy duty aluminum or stainless steel scoop with a long handle.

Don't forget to get a pouch for your goodies with 2 pockets, one for the good finds and one for the junk that you will throw away after the hunt.

I believe that water hunters 'repay' the beach for the good finds by taking the trash too and disposing of it properly.

Keep a bottle of vinegar in you vehicle to treat any jellyfish encounters (Like the one that got me today. Ouch! ).

Finally, if you don't have a digital camera, get one so that you can post your finds for all of us to see!

Good luck and good hunting!
