Post Pointers for the beach

MD on the beach is my specialty. The reason I got into the hobby this time was the opportunity for lots of exercise. I use a VLF detector with automatic ground balancing (ACE 250).
I would recommend using the maximum sensitivity and minimum discrimination in the dry sand (blanket line) and sift for everything. You may find that ground conditions force you to back off on sensitivity.
Start as early in the morning as possible. It would be good to look at the beach at maximum population the day before to see where to concentrate - and where the "blanket line" is.
I can perpendicular to the water line. Walk from the furthest extent of the blanket line (or other marker like a boardwalk) to where the sand is damp from the surf. Turn and slightly overlap your swing with the path down.
Repeat working your way along the beach.
I would recommend carrying a plastic bag to collect metal trash you discover. That way you will only discover it once. It also increases good Kharma if you pick up litter along the way.
A scoop of some sort is essential. Also important is placing as large of a rare earth magnet as you can find in the bottom of the scoop in the sifting area. This will pick up all of the ferromagnetic stuff you run in to. Bobby pins, small rusted metal and other things slip through the mesh making you have to scoop and scoop again.
It is important to identify every target. Silver bracelets look like bobby pins. Diamond stud earrings slip through the scoop.
In a few short months I have collected $152 in clad, gold rings, silver rings, silver bracelets, charm bracelets and a few gemstones mounted in rings and earrings.
Good hunting. Please post your finds. Hope there is a great diamond tennis bracelet out there for you.
