Hi John, just be sure to give it time and read the manual and experiment too. It won't hurt anything. Just stay with it and there is good stuff out there waiting for you to find it. So God Bless and happy hunting.

Hi John:

Welcome to the TQ family!!

My first detector was a Bounty Hunter Pioneer 202 and I loved it, but I have to say, though I found a lot of neat things with my Bounty Hunter, and the depth/item indicators were pretty accurate, I wasn't all that impressed with the pinpointing capabilities....which are pretty much zilch. I don't know about anyone else, but I wasn't able to pinpoint beyond an approximate 12-14" radius and my holes were huge - no such thing as a nice, neat plug!

Keep your sensitivity knob at 2:00, I found that best (I'm assuming our machines are similiar). Also - make sure you have a coil cover. One thing I learned early on with the Bounty Hunter open coil is that tall grass or weeds really set the thing off. I think the grass (anything over 2") would get in between the coil rings and cause it to beep. That could account for the constant beeping you're getting.

Keep practicing, like everyone said. It's a great machine to learn on and you'll find it's pretty accurate once you get use to the tones.

Have fun!

So far I've found one very old license plate, a lot of nails, some funky green pennies and other misc. change.. but who's counting? I'm just here to have fun, giggle, and make friends along the way!

Default Welcome from 1 newbie to another

Hi John and welcome to TQ. I can relate to what your going through. We are new at this also. We dig and find nothing and when we find a penny we get excited. As with anything patience pays off and I know we will be able to "read" the machine before too long. We just got a probe/pinpointer and from what most say that should help a lot.

Welcome to TQ, John! Do like everyone says here but also look at the Metal Detecting Tips section of the forum. There's a list of tips from the members of the TQ community that I think are great!

John,
Welcome to TQ. All of us are learning together. Riki727 finally made sense of why a coil cover is needed. I could never figure it out.
The Bounty Hunter I had did have a coil cover as standard issue.

Pinpointing can be a problem. Look at the hand held pinpointers forum. When MD in the grass it is really essential.

Have patience, practice with known targets and ask questions here. Looking forward to posts of your fantastic finds to come.
Happy hunting.

Welcome to TQ. I have a Radio Shack Discovery 1000 (equivalent to the BH Tracker 4). Use it as a back up.
