Hi. I have been interested in getting a detector and trying my hand at treasure hunting a long time. I just bought a detector and am ready to get started. I got a Bounty Hunter Lone Star model (Products - Lone Star - Bounty Hunter Metal Detectors). It seemed like a decent one to get started with anyway.
I took it down to a local park and found a pop bottle lid. I got lots of beeps all around and played with the discriminator some. I dug around some but never found anything else even though I was getting beeps. I guess it takes practice. Any pointers are greatly appreciated. Take care, John |

First off welcome to the TQ family!!!!!!
I use a BH as well. When I first started I dug everything. The best point I could give you is to learn your machine. Try your own yard. listen to the tones and dig all sounds until you can tell which is good and garbage. Take a penny, nickel, dime, quarter and trash and put them on the ground and listen to the tones. I hope this helps. I know it helped me.

All kinds of good folks here that will lend a hand if they can.Good Luck & HH. The TINMAN |

Just want to say that I agree with what everyone else had said and also, you said you dug around some and never found anything. You're correct when you say "I guess it takes practice" You said that you dug around but didn't find anything, maybe your you're not pinpointing it correctly. I don't know what you mean by alot of beeps, but there could be alot of targets or trash that could be close together, you may need to use less sensitivity, and/or disc to isolate targets which will make pinpointing easier. One more thing, when you dig for a target, swing the detector again over the hole and the plug that you dug, to see if the target is in the plug or the hole. If it's not in the plug, pinpoint the hole again to see if in fact you dug the right place, if you did, dig deeper. If it's in the plug, closely examine every bit of it, a little at a time. You'd be surprised at how easy it is to hold a dirty item in your hand and never recognize it. This is where a handheld pinpointer comes in handy. Don't give up, we've all been there. Good luck and HH! Welcome again to TQ and looking forward to your posts!
