Default Hello from Texas

Hello, all. I'm a 31 year old male, married 8 years, no kids (yet) - just 3 dogs and 2 cats.

I've always been interested in old "things." I used to spend hours digging through all the stuff at my grandparent's house, just fascinated at all the history that was behind everyday objects. I was something of a numismatist and horologist as well, but you can only buy so many coins and watches on a teenager's allowance.

When I was about 13, my uncle gave me his old White's Coinmaster unit...Needless to say, I didn't have the attention span to learn all the machine's foibles and such. I got discouraged pretty quickly; besides, the durn thing took 8 AA batteries and the plastic battery holder was broken. I don't recall ever finding anything with it. I later sold it at a garage sale.

I'm a semi-retired semi-pro musician. When I finally left that behind me, I unconsciously found myself yearning for a new way to spend my free time. I narrowed it down to R/C helicopters and treasure hunting. The metal detector seemed like something I would be more likely to stick with, and besides, I could use that to find some cool old stuff.

I'm really excited about it - so far in my yard alone I've found 2 Wheaties and a Standing Liberty quarter. I'm also in the market for a probe detector, and I think I might just haul off and make one myself (I'm a huge dork and love that kind of stuff. BTW, has anyone heard of/used the kit from Essex Metal Detectors from England? Just curious.)

During my research on which detector to buy, I stumbled upon this site. So far I've learned a lot and have been genuinely impressed by the overwhelming support and compassion you all display toward your fellow hobbyists.

Anyway, I've rambled on enough.

Chris

Hi Chris and welcome to TQ. You certainly picked a friendly and helpful site and a good hobby.

Hadn't heard of Essex but went to their site, did you build your own?

Looking forward to which detector you decide on and seeing your finds!

Welcome to the site Chris! This is a site full of great info, and folks.

Be sure to contact our sponsors about buying your detector, or just to ask questions. It sounds like you are ready to get into a great hobby.

Good luck with your choice of detector. Heck that alone can take weeks, Beale.

Thanks for the warm greetings!

I actually purchased an Ace 250 last week at Fry's (I'm impatient and didn't want to wait :) I will definitely be buying my coil cover from a sponsor, though.

MinelabMan, I haven't built the probe yet...Just trying to decide between that Essex kit and the Gardner-Bender mod. I sure could use a probe, though. I'm tired of leaving larger-than necessary holes.

Thanks again, everybody

*edit*
BTW, sorry for posting in the wrong forum
