Default New to metal detecting

Hello everyone. I have wanted a metal detector for several years and finally decided to get a cheap one just to see if this is something I will enjoy. I figured the best way to get real information and help is to join a forum. I live in Northern Il. I (we wife and I ) love hiking in the woods and being outdoors. We love hunting mushrooms spring and fall. Its more the hunt than the finding. I think its just the challenge. We even go looking for old bottles. Not for monetary value but just to look. Anyhow I just bought an ancient old white 4000/d series 2. I got it pretty cheap so I figure if this is not my cup of tea I am not out much. If I enjoy this I can always upgrade. As I know nothing about metal detectors is the one I listed capable of finding any thing more than bottle caps, beer cans, and nails? I am sure I will be back on here frequently looking for help in operating this piece of equipment.
All have a good day and may you find your pot of gold whatever it may be.

Welcome, welcome! That's as good a place as any to start with, and if you are already outside and have a passion for finding things, I think you're well on your way to enjoying this hobby too. Once you find something cool you'll be hooked (I say this and the coolest thing I've found so far is an old license plate, but hey I liked it!) - Goodluck out there looking for all those things. I hope you encounter treasure along the way, and I look forward to reading about it on TQ!!!

Default real good machine

the old whites machines are work horses. they will find the good stuff. go to whites web page White's Electronics and down load the users manual. read it and practice, practice and read, read and practice... and once you have gotten tired of reading the manual....READ IT AGAIN.

i have a whites 6000di series 3 and i love it. but the way to treasure is the same way to "Carnegie Hall".... PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE....

And let me Welcome you to the absolute BEST Metal Detecting Forum any where.

happy huntin and be sure to let us know what ya find

Welcome to the site. This is the place to be. There are a lot of really smart people that give good advise. Once you start hunting and find the really old stuff, you will not be able to stop. You will be hooked. Like BigBill said--Practice. Schools and playgrounds are a good place to start. Post your finds and let us know how you do. Happy Hunting...Buster....
