Great story! I wish my dad was around to md with me when I was eight... You two will have a blast and it's something he'll never forget it.. Bama is a great state to dig, I bet a lot of people that hid there valuables during the war were unable to return and retrieve them… There misfortune is still waiting for y'all.

From what I read, the Ace 250 is a good one.

How are you going to explain those scratches and grass stains on the bottom of the coil of your son’s brand new detector when he opens it Christmas morning.? Well, I guess you could dig a few holes in your back yard Christmas eve and blame it on Santa??? Make a big fuss about him not covering up his holes. lol.

Oh yea, not sure if it will be of benefit to you or not but here's a link to apply for a metal detecting permit on TVA land. It only took one week to get my permit back. It's great to live in a state where the government will actually let you hunt on their land....just don't pick up any arrow heads

Thanks this will definatly help! I've done a lot research on equipment but I haven't looked into the legal end of things. Where do I look for city or municipal ordinances regarding metal detecting?

Ya know, I've never really been able to find much on the internet about the metal detecting laws in Alabama. This is about the only thing I can find:

It shall be unlawful for any person to use any metal detection device in any State Park for the purpose of finding and removing, from said park, any items that are not his/her personal possessions without permission from the Park Manager.


Just be careful about going on State & Federal Park land. Get permission from a Park Ranger if you can. As far as I know, City Parks and schools are fair game.
