:christmastree1:Wow! There sure are a lot of you folks here! I appreciate the warm welcome. There are a lot of places in Alaska to look for and find gold. Most of the people I know who shoot for nuggets have moderate to excellent success up here. If you ever plan to come up to Alaska I would recommend stopping in at Alaska Mining and Diving in Anchorage. They are the best source in this state when looking for gold or doing any kind of metal detecting regardless of your equipment. They know where and how to find it, and are willing to share much of what they know.
I've found numerouse newer coins at schools, parks and community sports fields around the Mat-Su Valley where I live. Fortunately I am only about 7 miles from Hatcher Pass where I can look for nuggets. The DFX is a good machine, but admittedly it isn't the best for gold detecting. I would recommend a Gold Bug or many other "Gold Detectors" over my DFX for shooting nuggets. Regarding older sites, well there are a few. I did a lot of research on local history and discovered that most older sites will not exceed about 100 years old. Most sites of enterest are about 50 years old. At the rate that Alaska is growing, sites are often barried before anyone gets a chance to search them. Another problem we face up here is the propensity for undergrowth to completly take over an area. With our long summer days underbrush, trees, devils club and weeds take over an unused area fast, often leaving little evidence that anyone ever passed that way and making access to the area difficult. At the rate of growth, older sites are destroyed with little consern for conducting a search prior to redevelopment. There are of course obvious reasons for that, but it is still a shame. I found however that when new roads go in, or a new building over an old site, it pays just to ask one of the contractors if they mind you detecting a little out of their way. When a 90 year old building at the corner of Main and the Parks HWY was moved a few years ago, a rather smart fellow asked permission to screen the parking lot for coins. He found several pounds of collectable grade coins and some tokens. I've met with some success in parking lots of retired bars. Ear rings, coins, pop tops (of course) and keys are prevelent. Looking forward to posting next summers finds. Meanwhile I think I should read up on the many informative posts you have garnered here. Your Bro in the Snow Wild Bill |
