Smile Hello from Alaska

I retired from the Alaska DOC about ten years ago. I got into sales for several years, and did well. My wife Terri and I started a local magazine on motorcycling and published for two years. We have five kids, 4 boys and 1 girl, all grown and out of the house. I ride my motorcycle all summer to work in Anchorage (About a 100 mile round trip.)

I've owned my Whites DFX for about five years now but until recently had little time to use it. I hope to get out and spend some serious time under the headphones this next summer. Although there is a lot of gold nugget detecting up here, I'm really not into that very much. I prefer shooting for coins and artifacts. The problem with that is Alaska has only had a little over one hundred years of very sparse western civilization influence. This means there are few sites to investigate. Most of the recognizable locations have been designated as historic places so detecting is not authorized.

I shoot sports venues and have looked for a few nuggets locally. I’ve also checked out a few older sites nearby. I think I had the most fun though when I took my DFX to Hawaii and checked out a few beaches, lots of stuff there. I’ve never found anything of value, but I hope to someday. It’s always a thrill to uncover a trinket or a coin.

Your bro in the snow, Wild Bill

Welcome to TQ, Wild Bill! I've been to Wasilla once - and loved the area...it's been more than 15 years since I've been to Alaska - but my wife and I are planning to visit (hopefully not TOO far down the road)!

TQ is a great forum and you'll enjoy talking and sharing with us as you get back to diggin'! Happy Hunting!

Shawn

Welcome to TQ, Bill! I have seen a lot of articles about nugget hunting in Alaska but yours is the first I've read about coinshooting and the like. I can understand your situation. Maybe there's a fair site near by or a school?
