Yogi welcome to the forums and the MADNESS. It seems we all go thru the which detector to buy dilemma. It doesn't matter if it's for your first detector or on an upgrade. Don't be shy, be sure to contact some of the sponsors on TQ - they're very helpful.

I'm fairly new too and i had the same kind of questions you have. I spent hours researching them all. Once i had narrowed it down to a handful in my price range which sounds as if it is similar to yours; I just started looking on ebay and Craigs list for the best deal. I ended up getting an XLT w/ hphones and case for $500 on ebay. It was a little more than i wanted to spend, but it was a good enuf value that i figure if i take real good care of it i can sell it later for about what i paid for it. Sounds to me like most of the veterans on this forum have a garage full of MD's.
Good luck, I look forward to hearing about and seeing your finds. Let us know what you finally get.
Jim

The XLT is not a bad machine. You will like it when you get used to it. I have had mine for over 10 years. So much you can do with it..Happy Hunting.Any questions, just ask away, lots have that detector here on this site.....Buster....
