Hi, My name is dan and I' was turned on to this site by PAPPY. I have been treasure hunting in VA for two years now on and off. I bought a white's prizm 500 a few years ago. When I was a kid growing up in upstate NY my Dad bought me a cheap detector from radio shack, and that's what got me started. What a difference a new detector makes! I have found a lot of coins. I mostly try to find old silver and wheat pennies. Being as I live where the civil war took place you would think I found alot, but have'nt found anything really old. Mostly 1940's dimes etc. My best find lately was a 1942 Walking liberty half. I mostly go to parks in the area, and city owned property. Havent gotten in trouble for trespassing yet. I see alot of places I would like to try but am not sure about the tresspassing/ownership issues. I never leave holes or disrupted ground, I always try to return the ground to it's original condition. I have the beaches here too to check but they always put new sand down so i don't have much luck there, unless a hurricane washes it all away that is. I found 3 mercury dimes and a dozen wheaties in my own yard when I first got my detector.
Anyway, I am interested in knowing how the rest of the detecting world is faring, and would like to know if the 1.000 dollar detectors are worth the price? Are they that much better? Thanks to PAPPY for inviting me to the site! ![]() |

Welcome to the site Sabresfan! Glad to have you on. You sound like you are doing very well so far. Norfolk is a big place lots of area to hunt. My son is USN stationed in Norfolk.
I grew up about a hour from Norfolk. Maybe we can get a hunt over Christmas. I will be home from Dec 25-30. Either way looking foward to your posts, Beale.

Hi Sabresfan and WELCOME to TQ. :santa1: Lots of Great Folks here so if ya have any questions just ask away. Sounds like your doing Pretty Good. The $1,000.00 detectors are worth it if you are looking for more options on what it is capable of doing. They usually have a little more of a learning curve to. The main thing to remember is no matter what brand or price range detector your using it's only as good as the person swinging it and how well they have come to know what it is telling them. Looking forward to your post and finds.
Good Luck & HH. Th:reindeer: TINM:reindeer:N :christmaswreath: :christmaswindow: :christmaswreath: :merrychristmas: |

Hi Dan and welcome to TQ! I see you keep good company! The more expensive detectors tend to give the user more control over the mix of settings that they want to use. More fine tuning will allow you to make custom hunting setting more in tune with what you are seeking. But, I've seen plenty great finds with less expensive detectors too.
Hope you find some things to post soon and good luck hunting!
