Default Its all greek to me.

Greetings all, I have trolled the internet looking for some help and I think this might be the place. I'm new to metal detecting and I'm not even sure how to go about it. My wife bought me a VLF treasure detector for christmas this yr. Its something i have always wanted to try. I went out a few times to a local park and found more bottle caps than i can count I got pretty discouraged and havent done much since. I really want to give this a chance....any advice? One more thing.... is my metal detector a good model?

Welcome to TQ! There are a lot of people that started with a lower priced detector and made really good finds. Don't get discouraged yet, there is a ton of trash in the parks and you have to dig some of the trash sometimes to get the good stuff. I'm still digging a lot of trash in my yard and have found good stuff too. The good stuff is yet to come!

Default if yours is the bounty hunter model

which I suspect it is,don't be discouraged,as for bottle caps and pull tabs, they read the same as much gold jewelry, nickels etc. (read the post here about discrimination 101)it should be here in todays or yesterdays posts. you should have a discrimination knob if it's like my buddy's BH gold digger it'll be the knob on the right, you can turn it up to discriminate some of the trash, just remember you'llalso be missing the oppurtunity to find other items.(this is why buster says pull tabs are his friends, they are at the same range as nickels and jewelry)
My 9 yo daughter was easily finding pennies in the yard with the gold digger after tweaking the knobs some,it's really good at pinpointing also, the depth might not be the greatest, but you should be able to find enough clad(modern coins)to pay for this machine in no time at all
If I were you I'd try to get out to the local park and check out the playground, very easy digging usually in the mulch/bark and kids tend to lose alot of stuff.
Welcome to treasureQuest, and happy hunting
Hank

Hi Marine and welcome to TQ.

Like was said, don't be discouraged, if you're finding trash, your detector is working and any one of those pieces could just have well been jewelry or a coin.

This hobby sometimes requires alot of patience, you didn't say where you detected but one thing is for sure, your coil has to be over something to detect it. You may want to hit a local park, fairground, tot lot, etc, where people congregate, sure you'll still get trash, but a very good chance of getting something good also.

Hang in there, the good finds will come!

Welcome to the site Marine! I would like to take a moment to thank you for your service.

Yea the trash really comes with the MD'n. One other piece of info. Gather up say one of each coin and put them on the ground. Along with these put a pull tab, maybe a gum(foil) wrapper, even a nail. Space them out and try detecting each one. See and hear how each react to your machine. This will at least give you an idea of what to look and listen for.

For sure check tot lots, and parks. Anywhere the kids play. It makes getting started easier. Good luck to you, Beale.

Welcome to the site. Don't give up. It takes a while to learn your machine. I've not heard ot that model, but if it brrps when you pass it over metal, then it will work. Practice like the other post said, with coins and pop tops on the ground. Can't wait to see you posting your finds.

Hi 4mrMarine,and welcome to TQ!

You mentioned that the wife bought you a vlf machine. VLF stands for Very Low Frequency, which is the frequency range that most detectors use to detect. What we would need to know is the brand name and model for your machine to help you. Please let us know.

Do you have a manual?
