Default Hi There

Howdy,

Thought I'd drop in and say G'day.

I'm not a recreational detector but my work does involve a bit of detection of underground objects .

I usually use a German OKM Future I-160, but I've recently been digging through the old expedition box and dusted off an old Famous Trails MD 7012 detector. It's a bit of a toy, but it's light weight and it used to work well about 10 years ago, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

We research formerly used military sites here in Australia looking for undisclosed underground stores sites. We also map and survey old US and Australian military bases from WWII in remote areas of Australia in order to record and preserve them for the future. This work involves some geophysics and a lot of reading plus slogging up the odd jungle-clad hill, but the results are worth it when you get a great find on the I-160 or stumble across a WWII Indian motorcycle sitting in the jungle rusting away.

Sounds very interesting abmm. Wished I could find one of those Indian motorcycles.
Welcome to TQ, and show us some photos

Welcome to TQ, abmm! I think you are our first member from Australia and that certainly distinguishes you!

I have heard of the military bases in Australia and understand they are great places to search.

Please consider putting yourself on our buddy map, located as the first post in our Member's Announcements section, just above this one on the main index. We really would appreciate seeing your location there!

In your profile section there is a photo gallery available if you would like to share some of your past finds with us.

I understand Australia has many resources, not the least are the beautiful opals that are mined there.

Again, welcome to TQ and I hope you will share some of your finds and a bit about Australia!

Wow! Thanks for the warm (and fast) welcomes!

I'm going to have to dig through the photo archives for some relic pics as well as some screenshots of the I-160 data. I think you guys would find it very interesting.

Some of our recent military relic and architecture finds with the I-160 this year:

Reinforced concrete bunker at about 17 feet (5.5 metres?)
crushed 44 gallon fuel drum at 6 feet (2 metres)
Another reinforced concrete bunker at 12 feet (4 metres?)
Buried radio parts

Any of you guys seen that old Aussie Mel Gibson movie called "Attack Force Z"? Well, they were a real WWII Special Operations unit Called "Z Special Unit" and we were surveying one of their WWII training bases. One of our guys had an old Vietnam-era military mine detector with him and decided to run it over one of the dumping sites.

We found:

Live Japanese rifle ammunition by the bucketload
Several "time pencils" - a type of chemical fuse igniter for demolitions
2 clam shells - empty
1 limpet mine - empty
1 pocket incendiary assembly (WAS live, but the leather case had mostly wasted away leaching out the incendiary mix and leaving the brass firing device intact)

These were REALLY rare finds which we are preserving for museum display.

I'll dig out the pics in a day or two.

Cheers,

and thanks again
