Hi, Tina and welcome to TQ! You are in the right place as we like to help people who are new to the hobby!

Sounds like you are going about it in the right way and if we can answer any questions, fire away!

HI Trina,
If you know someone with a metal detector, ask to go out on a hunt with them. Have them show how theirs works. There are lots of tricks and shortcuts to finding coins, jewelry etc., especially when hunting in grassy areas. When you are ready to get a metal detector, I would recommend buying the best one you can afford. I started with a cheap one, and every few months kept buying one a little better. After buying about five pretty good ones, I skipped right to the DFX, which is the best one Whites makes. Most of the brands sold by the dealers have some good working machines. Maybe a dealer might let you try some different brands out, and give you some instruction on how to use them. Metal detecting is a great hobby.
Good luck in getting into this fun hobby,
Robalou

thanks everyone!

I don't know anyone that has one so I'll just wait until I save up. Probley will only spend $200 or so when I get one but thats ok it's a start. My Dh would have a heart attack if I wanted a really expensive one as He already bought me my cameras ( LOL My passion) Digital Rebel 10mp, Sony 8 mp, Canon 10 mp. lol. soooo I have to keep this hobby price very low. Either way hope to have one before summer is over!

I had a look at the photography part of the forum and wow there are some wonderful photo's there! I can't wait to join in! ( its to cold for me to have my son out just yet But hopefully next weekend will be warmer and I can get to the zoo and take some shots)

Welcome Trina to TQ, keep reading and when you get your detector, you will be a little ahead of the game. Good luck in your hunts.

Earl
