Default Intro from a New Old-timer

From a BA at Purdue to four years in the Air Force to running a group home for delinquent teenage girls to working promotions for the Atlanta Braves to Parkland College, with radio in the background (sometimes the foreground) all the way.

I'm now retired. From 1981 to 2007 I was a broadcast instructor and the general manager of radio station WPCD at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois.

Also am or have been:

A paperboy, ham radio licensee (N9XDK), newspaper and magazine writer, author of two books, program director/news director/sports director/DJ for the real WKRP (in Dallas, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb), auctioneer, bass fisherman, musicologist (60's rock, psychedelic, folk, and really bad country), music review columnist, movie review columnist, yard sale nut, autograph collector and dealer, the Alex Trebeck of central Illinois (I write and host a Quiz Bowl TV show for high school teams), wedding and newspaper photographer, webmaster for my high school graduating class (bdhs65.com), real estate broker, master’s degree in Technology, lots of other cool stuff.

And – don’t let me forget this one - a metal detector enthusiast, and member of the Treasure Hunter's Hall of Fame. (Drop by sometime and I'll show you my plaque).

If you want more, here's my personal website:

Dan Hughes Home Page

I'm actually quite fascinating. So why can't I keep friends? (Oops, wrong forum.....)

LOL Well! You are an accomplished fellow! Is Braintrust the name of your Quiz Bowl show? I used to watch a show that was IL teen teams and I learned a lot from it. I am not certain of the name but I can't imagine there is more than one.

Anyway, howdy and welcome!

Hi Janiece (and how often do you see THAT misspelled?),

My quiz show was called THE PARKLAND CHALLENGE High School Quiz Bowl, and originated in Champaign, Illinois.

Actually, there are a lot of TV stations that run quiz shows for high school academic bowl teams in their areas. (Mine was the best, of course).

My all-time favorite answer:

I was looking for "development of the alphabet."

The Question: What was the Phoenicians' chief contribution to civilization?"

The Answer I got: "Blinds."

------------------
I've just begun work on a book that combines my Quiz Bowl stories with actual questions from the competition.

Actually, I have a lot of spare time.

The whole secret is to TURN OFF THE TV. Except for an occasional sports event, I pretty much quit watching television when it went to color.

Most people watch television three or four hours per night, and more than that on weekends if they are sports fans. In just one year, you're talking well over 1,250 hours looking at that screen.

Or over 31 forty-hour weeks.

So who has trouble finding spare time?

Default new old timer

Welcome Dan, I spent 13 weeks in your neck of the woods in 69-70 at Chanute AFB, and one crazy nite looking for some red neck college boys that beat up some of my friends outside the Red Lion bar. Got my first tatoo from Jim Breezy in Rantoule.
