This past month I drove the Alaska highway 3 times (Denver to Fairbanks and back, then up and flew back). With the right information taking a prospecting trip on your own can be simple.
While there I spent two days at friends place called Faith Creek Camp on mile 69 Steese Highway, North and East of Fairbanks, it's about half way to Circle, AK.
They own Patented land and you can go panning, sluicing, dredging, or nugget shooting (nugget detecting) there. They have guest cabins and space for RV's or tents. The fees are low and you keep what you find.
The drive from Fairbanks is over well maintained road (even the gravel was smoother than I25 here in Colorado), but the living is "primitive" as there is no power, phone, water or other services run out there. The owners provide their own generator for power, cary their water from Fairbanks and sparingly use a satelite phone.
My pictures were taken Sept. 24,2004 and it was 29 degrees F. Needless to say the season was prety much over for 2004, but it doesn't always end this early.
Visit their site for more information, and remember they have to come into town to pick up email through Kinkos access services.

May the gold in your pan be worth the effort you put into finding it. :D :D
