Oh yeah, that's a spotted bay bass, or "spottie", though it's hard to see the spots on that one. They are probably the most common game fish in the San Diego bay. Great fighters. We have kayak tournaments dedicated to fishing them.

Lol, actually they taste like a sponge! I tried one, and never again. Great fighters though. The bay does provide halibut, bonito, sculpin (california scorpionfish), spiny lobsters and few other delicious treats. The bonito makes excellent sushi and the rest get made into fish tacos or wrapped in bacon and thrown on the BBQ. When I'm looking for really good eats I paddle out into the kelp beds of La Jolla and try for a yellowtail. Life is great when a 30 pound fish is towing your kayak into the open ocean!
