Default Is it Gold???

I have a question for all you experienced prospectors. I was out hunting arrowheads in a plowed field along a river last weekend. I saw a shiny object on the ground. When I pickrd it up, it appeared to be a broken piece of quartz with gold flakes in it. My question is: Is this really gold? I know gold nuggets can be found in quartz, but I don't know about flakes. The area where I found this rock is in central Ohio, and I know there is gold in the area, the GPAA has a claim a few miles upriver. When I got home I ran the MD over the rock, and it is metal. I can't post a pic right now but I will try to get one up soon. Can anyone help me shed some light on this rock?

Thanks All,
Andy

Gold does not sparkle,it's just gold color.Mica can sparkle and appear to be gold. You didn't say the size of the specimen, but if your detector beeped, then I would investigate it further.DO NOT try to chip or get any of the 'gold' out of the quartz. If it happens to be gold it will be worth a lot more in the quartz as a nuggett specimen.Take it to your local gpaa chapter or to a reputable jeweler for confirmation.Goodluck

Cool Warsawdaddy has it right

Do not attempt to claim the substance out of the stone.
As is ,if indeed it is gold, it would be worth more as a "specimen" than a crushed 'rock".

Congrats!

the best way to check is scratch it with a your fingernail and see if it will flake off, if it does it is fools gold and if you can make a dent in it without it flaking off then you could have a good hunk of money depending on the size. have it checked by a gold dealer if all else fails. good luck
