Default Question about soil and digging

Went out yesterday afternoon for about 30 min to an old park from the 1800's in another town. I was actually driving thru the town when I saw it. Had a sign calling the name of the park and est. in 1889. Anyway, I found a few clad coins, but what I found was it is that old buckshot mud, or gumbo mud. Hard as a rock when it's dry, all cracked up. Does anyone have suggestions on what type of tool to use in it. My garden shovel would hardly make a dent past 2-3 inches. Just wanted to know if anyone else has this soil.

Default oops I forgot

Get the orange handle #85 digger. It will stand out against the dark soil and you will not forget to pick it up.

Default chizzle/hammer

I had to use a chizzle and hammer to get through a hard packed clay which covered man layed limestone rock. The 4" of clay was covered by about a few inches of soil and grass.

Talking Glad I read this thread

Most the soil around here (Galt, Ca.) is clay a pick ax bounces off of. Specially when dry

Here in central NC we got good ole red hard clay. I ended up buying the Lesche from a local dealer. I really like the way it works. Good luck with your digging, Beale.
