Use Headphones. As Chuck has pointed out, they mean better battery life and perhaps most important more finds. Also the constant beeping of detectors without headphones can be very anoying. If you read the rules of organized hunts and outings you will almost always see the Requirement for everyone to use headsets.

I will often move one earpiece back on one ear to a comfortable position where I can hear some outside noise (such as animals, people approaching, or rattle snakes), but this is only a slight infringment in one ear not both.

p.s. And if you are woried about hot weather and sweating use the smaller headsets like you get with a walkman or something similar in the hot zones.

I was not using headphones for the longest. When I aquired a new MDing buddy, and he let me use his machine with headphones, it made alot of difference. If you look at my finds from last year,(no headphones), and my finds from this year(headphones added), you will see a huge difference in the number and age and quality of my finds. Get you some headphones!!!!

Default I agree

I agree with everyone that headphones are a must, but here is another little bonus I have found. If you are getting someone bugging you with a lot of questions and wanting to talk a lot, just tell them you can't hear them with headphones on and they seem to go away.

I always use head phones on my Ace250 or any other detector, the sounds a metal detector makes attracts way too much attention when working around lakes, parks, etc...............

Thumbs up RatPhones

Chuck is correct about the RatPhones. I have tried many different headphones in the 39+ years I have been detecting and when I bought a set of RatPhones I discovered them to have superior background noise suppression and comfort. They also have independent (L & R) volume control so you can set each ear for optimum level for your hearing. The frequency response range is also excellent for detecting.
