Default Need help with civil war site

Went to an old 160 year old home today, I hunted last year. Was used as a hospital during the civil war. I got skunked! Evedently the previous owners drank alot of beer, because thats all I found. Cans, pull tabs, pieces of cans, pieces of pull tabs. It is a big lot. I came up with 1 penny and a telescope that reads "Wollensak Rochester USA, 6X Telescope." Also found a couple of cool bottles I will post after cleanup.

I was in Relic mode looking for buckles, bullets, something civil war. Nothing, nada. Any suggestions. I've not hunted in relic mode before and it was alot of noise in my head phones with nothing but cans to show. I was using a Garrett 2500, (borrowed) thinking the depth would help. Not today. Then the Lightning came.

ERnurse, The site we are hunting now is loaded with trash also. We believe it was a Civil War encampment. It is also apparently a place where people have been going for years to drink beer and whatever else they do in the middle of the woods. After a few days of digging cans and hundreds of shotgun shells, the coins, buttons and relics started to apear. Most of the coins were decent signals but as Chuck said listen close for the "Iffy" signals,. Most of the civil war buttons were reading as pulltab so it just shows you have to dig everything. Also alot of the coins are up against trees and I use the stock coil, so I make sure I get real close to the trees and keep going over the places we have already been. Also as BigJohn suggested check the edges of creeks because everybody needed water. One more suggestion is to look for depressions in the ground that might indicate a wagon trail or a walking path.
Hope this helps
Ken

Default I'd Work A Grid

Take your time with the place, And go slow, Dig all the surface crap, in a two foot sqare, After you've cleared alot of the surface garbage, Adjust your detector for more depth, Then go for the deep stuff, This will be very fustrating and time consuming at first, May even spend a whole day digging trash But, it will allow you to get to the good stuff. Dig all the deep sounds even if they sound trashy. P.S. What you put into it is what you will get out of it.

Default Get away from the obvious

ERnurse - sounds like you have a pretty good location. What works for me a lot of times is to find some very large trees in the area. I have been very successful hunting there. The other thing I do is to get away from the obvious. Everybody wants to hunt what can be seen now. If the area is not paying out I widen my hunt to areas most people would probably not look at. If you can find where the outhouses were that also can be of great help. A lot of travel has been done from the house to the outhouse. I hope that this has helped you. If you have not tried these before give it a try. I know that it is very frustrating to have such a good site and find nothing but cans and such. Treasures are bound to be there. Don't give up.
