Default Rookie needs help

Hi. I live in Connecticut and for years had been thinking about getting a metal detector. I decided I'd rent one a few times to see if I really liked it. neddless to say I got hooked, and went out and bought a White's XLT. I am a complete novice, and wanted to call on you pros to see if I am just impatient, or if perhaps garner some tips from the experienced. I have been out with it at various locations, and find I am getting very good at pinpointing. I have been to 2 beaches, 2 state parks, a local park, my own yard, circa 1858, and my parents home circa 1950. I have found lots of coins, many quarters, dimes, some nickels, and many pennies. here is my question? I am finding lots of coins 1-2 inches deep, so obviously they are from the 1990-06 date range. I have found many 3-5 inches deep and seem to find they range from a few years old to the mid 1960s. The only place I found even some wheaties, was in my parents yard, where I found nothing but wheaties (7 in an hours worth of searching, more to be done). Am I doing something wrong not to be finding anything older, or am I just being impatient? Or even further, do I not have the experience to find the older coins yet? I just use the standard preset programs for now, is it not likely to unearth the real finds with that setting? I have found 2 rings, but they were junk rings. Just wanted to see if anyone could provide me with some ideas, or answers? Thanks in advance, and look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for the input. I have noticed I am getting used to the tones. I remember watching a video of someone not even digging, and plucking coins out of the ground with a screwdriver, and thought it was impossible. I have now been able to do it myself in just a week of use, but only when the depth is an inch or less.

Boobie hit it right on the head. Just keep Practicing & learn what your detector is telling you. the older coinns will come. You have a great machine & your off to a great start. Just remember it's as much if not more what the control box sittin on your shoulers is telling you as well as the one on the detector shaft. In this Hobby Patience is Truly a Virtue! Any questions? Just ask away. Good Luck & HH>

I am on my way to a yacht marina, it has been there for 100s of years in one form or another, and along the riverbanks, hopefully I have something to talk about when I get home, but nevertheless, it is a nice day, so I guess there really can't be a bad day, just being out getting fresh air and enjoying a sunny day is worth it, anything else is a bonus.

Smile me too. learning the language of my a new machine

It takes time and patient to learn the language of a new machine. that's what i am doing with my new minelab x-terra 30; with practice, practice, and more practice,.. mixed with a lot of patience, i will learn the language of my machine. oh,... and a lot of digging, just to be sure of what my machine is trying to tell me.

you mentioned all of the coins ,,and some lesser jewelry ,, but you did not tell us about the trash targets ??

are they abundant ? pull tabs ,foil, nails anything like that ?

sometimes you have to clear the surface to find the deeper targets ,,

also soil type and condition , wet,dry,moist, sandy,clay,mineralised ?

all of these things affect how deep you are shooting with the detector.

welcome to the hobby,, the better targets will come !!

try working the same area from different directions and at different times of the day .
