Default Newbie with Float Copper Question

I just purchased a Minelab Xterra 70, and one of the things I want to search for is float copper up here in the U.P. of Michigan. Does anybody have any tips? I got a feel for float copper by playing with some samples, but to my early testing out in the field, a lot of crap gives similar signals.

Also, the manual says the coil can be submerged in water. Is this totally safe?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The coil will be fine under water. The purity and mass of the float will vary, causing the signal to vary. The shape of the float will also cause the signal to vary. I'm guessing the area you will be looking will not have much other metal (save iron). I would investigate all the decent hits. Just my 2 cents worth!
