I think that most of the fields that produce a bunch of artifacts and really old coins used to have either old homesteads or businesses that have long since been torn down. Lots of research by looking at old maps to zero in on these locations, then asking permission of the current land owner. I would bet that most land owners don't know the history of their land.

This is what we mainly detect on in the UK,this is where are old finds come from.
It is certainly worth a try.

I live on 32 acres - mostly open fields. I had real doubts about finding anything of value. But my husband grew up in this area and knew that the creek that runs at the bottom of the fields has held long-time favourite fishing spots for many locals; there's an old railroad bed that runs through the center of the property; high school kids used to party in many of our fields; several owners ago there was a vineyard here; the owner before us used to fly his private plane in; and it's rumoured that a local gang hid a fortune somewhere around....so despite the fact that ours was the first building, there's lots of history. And my doubts were put aside last Saturday when I found a 1941 quarter about 4 inches down about 3 feet back from the creek bank. Goes to show...you just never know.
Ask for permission...and good luck!! |

I like to hunt for indian artifacts and have found some great spots to detect by looking for bits of glass, brick etc. Most fields are along the rivers and the rivers are the super highways of the past ! There are alot of old campsites, homesites etc. along the rivers that may not be on any map,so bye looking for little clues like the brick and glass you can find some great sites.
Last year my buddy and i found a site this way and so far we have found numerous state coppers, large cent's artifacts like musket balls, flat buttons and 3 war of 1812 naval buttons,1 half reale and a fugio cent !

I agree with RIP, I walk a plowed field right after a rain scouting for glass and pottery, but that was in my bottle hunting days ................
The way I look at it, if someone has walked those grounds there is always a chance of finding something ................ |

I would have to agree with everyone...ask for permission..I am sure there are some good folks up in NY that will allow you to md on those lands.
Riki, I am now curious, if you knew nothing of the hobby and someone came to you and asked to hunt your land would you allow it? Your property sounds like a wonderful place to md. |

I'm very much of a naturalist (or is it naturist...which one DOESN'T walk around naked? ) and I insist on respect for nature. I also believe that if you take something from the earth you have to leave something in return. |
