Default Need Some Help

Hello one and all...

I am starting a new project. this is a very intensive project with lots of research and MANUAL LABOR. i need to ask a lil bit of help from my TQ Family.

It may seem off topic but like i said it is important and is so much on topic you wont believe me till it comes to light. and every one on here will be the first any where in the world to see my finds.

I need info on old jars and crocks. dating from 1750 to 1900. i am in need of dimensions, pics, dif materials they could be made of (ie.. ceramic, glass, porcelain, clay, terra cotta), what type of material is used as lids/covers, Pics would be extremely helpful. if any one has any ideas or if you know of any websites dedicated to these objects pleez let me know. i have just a few weeks to get as much info as i can. this is gonna pay off in spades for me and i will be for ever grateful.

thanx in advance

Happy huntin Yall

Do a search on Redwing Crockery and Westernware Crockery / Pottery.......... Sleepy Eye and salt glazed are other terms to do a search on ...........

Here is some photographs I have, all of these crocks are salt glazed.

I don't have any sizes handy, I have sold all of my crocks,

The 1st two photographs are of two broken Redwings I found in a dump while deer hunting...........

The 3rd photograph is of an butter churn, I believe, unmarked and although the markings are similar to a Redwing I can not confirm that theory

The 4th photograph, the crock on the left is definitely a 2 gallon Redwing, the crock on the right is a 2 gallon, but I can not confirm if it is a Redwing.........

You may get some additional info off any PRIVY Digging Site. Theres one " Eddy's Privy Diggers " and I'm sure a whole lot more.

Good Luck on the Project

Default Hello

Hey Big Bill, I have had an interest in collecting stoneware, (CROCKS) for about twenty years or so. I have over hundred or so pieces. My pieces range form salt glazed ( circa. Pre 1900)to bristol glazed. In the last Ten years or so I shifted my interest into old Indian Motorcycles (1901-1953) so I would only would pick up an occasional piece that had advertising on it such as Pickles, cottage cheese, whiskey, wine etc. The ABSOLUTE best book I have that would cover history as well as materials used is a book called "The Potteries of McDonough County" This book was compiled from the Historic Illinois Potteries, A foundation for historical research of Illinois potteries. It has some good pics. and drawings of the old potteries. This county had lots of Ma and Pa shops due to the rich quality of the clay soil and the easy access of the rail lines . The big boy Western Stoneware was the soul survivor of the many ones who tried. I also have a excellent book with tons of color photos on Red Wing stoneware. If this is the type of info you need send me your address and I will send them to you. Keep them for as long as you need. If pics is what you need I lots of subjects to photo. 1 gal to 10 gal. jugs and crocks .Bailed/ unbailed and applied handles (ears) I just don't have a digital camera. Infact, I can't even figure out how to upload a picture on my T.Q postings? So if you need I will have to resort two the old fashioned way getting filmed developed and using the post office! Have a good one ......Kevin...(indian40)
