Lightbulb Magnetic Coin Question

Non-Canadian members - did you know?
Today I got a surprise. While coin shooting I thought I found a bobby pin but when I was shaking the sand out of my sieve I saw a Candian dime (10 cent coin if you want to be proper). As the last of the sand left the dime snapped onto the magnet I have in the bottom of the sieve to capture bobby pins and other magnetic junk.
I pulled it off the magnet and tested it again. Sure enough it is magnetic. A check on the web shows that since 2000 the Canadian dime is 92% steel and the Canadian penny is 94% steel (those are the only Canadian coins I have found so far). But that answered the question as to why the 1982 Canadian penny I found wasn't (and is actually worth 2 cents in copper).
Recalling another bobby pin signal when I found a penny, I pulled out the English penny I found a couple of weeks ago and have now discovered it was also magnetic. Since 1992 the English penny has been copper plated steel.
Apparently all Canadian coins are now magnetic.
A fun link related to this fact is:
"Halfbakery: Magnetic Coin Harvesting Shoes"

NOTE: I have fixed the link. There was a slight OOPS! on my part.

I wonder if that might not help clear the bobby pins from beach sand?
So, metal detecting is providing knowledge of world coins that I have been missing.

Default Very Interesting

Maybe I should drag my big roofing magnet up & down the beach first so I dont have to scoop it up. LOL. Always something new to learn. Thanks John.

Exclamation Magnet on a stick..

Canada, Mexico and Brazil have coinage that is ferrous and can be picked up by a magnet.

My Minelab Soverign has to be run in all metal mode to pick them out.
