I have a BH SSII. I had problems initially with the speaker going out and when I got it back from the repair it still did not work. I demanded a whole new machine, which they did send. Since then it has worked well, I do find stuff.
I do not have experience with any other machines, so I do wonder how it compares and will eventually go out with a buddy and his ACE250 and see how it fares. Not to beat a dead horse, but learning the machine is key. Knowing the right sensitivity for soil conditions is huge, otherwise you may be digging all kinda false signals. I have to run just under 50%, unless it is really dry, then I can bump it up a bit. I do have highly mineralized soil where I hunt, so that plays a part. HH- |

Hey, I am currently using a Wal Mart BH Pioneer 101 (had to sell my Fisher 1266-X... boy, do I miss the ol' girl...) and like it has been said many times here and elsewhere - you (or your machine) are only as good as the targets you're wiling to dig. This machine has paid for itself many times over - found many silver and gold rings, silver coins, and more clad than I ever thought I'd find with it.
Basically, the only real difference in high vs. low dollar machines is how deep they will go - besides that, all you really need is something to detect the metal in the ground. It's really more of a philosophical question, really. |

Now with all this talk on what stick to buy & swing, I can not say enough about Bounty Hunter and it proved itself again today, (for the money ) you cannot beat this stick,
While playing around in my backyard today, I went over a spot and heard a whisper, went back over the spot than nothing, checked again and nothing,(went all metal) and bang!!!! dug down about 8" and found a small old roof tack, two weeks ago I found a childs pendent also at about 8" it was deep. so if it's high end or low if you do not train your ears and get to know your stick you can spend as much as you want. HH with whatever you wind up getting. Last edited by Amvet; 09-19-2007 at 06:53 PM. Reason: spelling |

I have a BH Quick draw II, I like mine alot. But that was'nt always the case. When I first got mine back in April I was disappointed with it, because I expected to go right out and find loads of treasure. Now I know it does'nt work like that. I have slowly learned alot about my machine now and am much more comfortable and competent with it,but still have more to learn.I do plan to upgrade in a year or so but until then I'm going to be the best I can with what I have. Also, the folks on here are a great help.

sure I have been finding lots of new coins with it, mostly on the surface or in the plug...dose not seem to have much depth to it :( and I would like to go at LEASt 6-7 inches...but this thing (at air test) goes about 2 or 3, with a penny, I just hope I can get an ACE 150 or 250...maybe I can get better depth with them

I find new coins with my bounty hunter on top of soil
anything over 3 inches down forget it. I hunted a lot in the late 70's early 80's and learned that what ever brand of detector you choose you always want more depth! you should talk to a TQ sponser and tell them 1st what you can afford to spend and 2nd what kind of hunting you do beach relic whatever.3rd what kind of soil conditions in your area. depth is great but all in my area silver dimes are found at 4-6 inches deep. remember you are better off with a detector that fits your hunting needs, than one that has super depth and don't fit you hunting style |

When I recently restarted metal detecting in June (35 year lapse) I wasn't sure I would like it so I went for a very cheap solution. Big Lots had a Bounty Hunter VLF on sale for $49. I picked one up and headed to the beach and was hooked.
You can search TQ for my username (johnj45586) and see the clad, wheatie, gold and silver rings and all kinds of cool stuff I found. It only has one tone that has several variations. Once you learn the sounds you can tell bobby pins from dimes and other treasures. The down side was the dumb way that the handle is attached to the electronics box. I swing hard so it busted over and over again until there was no more plastic to hold the thing together. I switched to the ACE 250 and love it. Actually most of the detectors are good and will do the job when you learn the language. But absolutely - if you are serious - get a detector with an "S" handle. Go to the individual detector forums and read the reviews. Also, pay attention to the ones that are doing the detecting you are wanting to get in to. For instance, the ACE 250 is a great coin and jewelry magnet on land, but doesn't go in the water and doesn't prospect for nuggets. That's all right for me, I don't either. Good luck finding the right detector for you and happy hunting. I look forward to your posts of finds.

well thanks thats exactly what i am shooting for, coins and jewelry, So hopefully ill make the right choice this time and it will go deeper then 2 inches, even in WET grassy areas...where a good detector could get down double that.
